Building Hot Wheels Displays with Blue Kangaroo

Written by Ross Harris

Blue Kangaroo Design approached us on behalf of their client, Mattel to help design and build Hot Wheels Displays.

The project focused on creating a freestanding retail display for the Hot Wheels brand, designed to hold both standard and premium product ranges within a compact footprint.

The solution had to be practical, visually distinctive, and built for in-store performance.

The design brief

The brief called for a two-sided display unit, built around a 1000mm square base and approximately 1500mm in height. One side would present the core product line, and the other would feature the premium range. Each side needed a separate colour scheme to reflect the product tier, while keeping the overall design cohesive.

Blue Kangaroo brought the initial creative concept to the table. During an early design session, we worked together to sketch out a basic layout. From there, we were responsible for developing that idea into a production-ready format.

Technical development

The team produced a full set of CAD drawings and 3D renders to visualise the design of the hot wheels displays in more detail. This allowed the client to review the concept at a practical level and confirm alignment with brand and retail requirements.

Once the design was modified to suit the overall project constraints and then approved, we built a full prototype.

This version was dressed with sample merchandise to give an accurate view of the final look. The prototype was photographed and reviewed by the client. A few minor changes were requested, including small adjustments to layout and spacing.

We then built a second prototype incorporating these refinements, which was signed off for production.

Hot Wheels Displays – Rollout

Following final approval, we moved into production. This was quick to roll out with finished units arriving in stores within four weeks. Each unit was delivered fully assembled and ready for the in-store merchandising teams to complete with the Hot Wheels products.

Final outcome

The result was a compact, durable display with a clear visual split between the two product ranges. It offered a clean and functional in-store presence, and was easy to merchandise on site.

This project shows how collaborative design, combined with precise technical delivery, can take a branded concept and turn it into a finished product that performs in store.
